There is a portion of the cerebral cortex of your brain fall the deepest area between the temporal and frontex lobes. It's called the insula, and it's where desire starts. The insula is only about the size of a pea, but it triggers in our bodies and, by exception, in our lives, can be epic.

We'd like to imagine that we're in control. But more often than not the chemicals in our brains control us. The insula lights up and we are compelled to change our lives. Compelled by longing, compelled by yearning, compelled by desire for more...

Just like we need food and water, humans need each other. A brain study revealed that, when placed in an MRI, a patient's reward center lit up when another person sat in the room. Neurons fire when we talk to someone, think about someone. And they go haywire when we hold someone's hand. Our brains and bodies are actually programmed to seek each other out and connect. So, then why do so many people prefer being alone?

Why do we often run for the hills when we feel the slightest connection? Why do we feel compelled to fight what we're hard-wired to do? Maybe it's because when we find something or someone to hold onto, that feeling becomes like air and we're terrified we're going to lose it... And trust me, you can get pretty good at the alone thing. But most things are better when they're shared with someone else.

Grey's Anatomy 13x01

Don't you wish you could just take it back that thing you said, that thing you did? There's no "undo" button. There's only hoping we can learn, we can change. Right? We can do better. We can't take back what we've done. We can't undo the past... Because the future keeps coming at us.

Best to keep the past in the past, move on and learn from it. If we don't learn from our mistakes we wind up locked into a future we never choose. The past is written, there's no changing it. What's done is done... But the future is ours to choose, for better or worse.

As surgeons we are out brother's keepers, ride or die. Womb to tomb. We see each other's fears, we see the white knuckle panic of failure and we see ourselves. And who the hell likes looking at that?

We walk through these doors as interns... Chips on our shoulders, loners, lesser rockstars on the verge of greatness. We're thrown into the deep end together, told to save lives together, to save each other. We become family. And even when you really screw up family is always there, always on call. Womb to tomb, ride or die.

A painful irony for doctors is that we often have to make you sicker in order to heal you. If a bone has healed unevenly, we have to rebreak it. If a scar is too thick we have to scrape it off and create a new wound. We break you down to rebuild you...

We go to medical school because we want to learn how to fix what's broken. But we quickly learn that we often have to make things worse before we can make them better. It's risky and it's frightening for surgeons and pacients but usually it's worth it. You get a second chance of life and we get to be the architects of your second chance. It's a win-win... when it works.

Grey's Anatomy 14x02 

There's a saying we hear a lot around hospitals that goes like this "Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional". But I doubt the person who coined it ever went through major surgery. Or maybe they didn't mean physical pain, maybe they meant the other kind, the worse kind... Maybe they meant the kind of searing, seething, boiling pain that tells you you're a failure and a fraud. "Suffering is optional" That person didn't know what the fuck they were talking about.

As surgeons we try to eliminate pain. As humans we just try like hell to avoid it. When we can't avoid pain, we try to understand it with pithy little quotes that we can wrap our heads around like "suffering is optional" or "time heals all wounds". And my personal favorite "every pain has a purpose". God, I hope that one's true.
